Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Announce Exciting Summer Camp Programs for 2009

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania…Registration is now under way for summer camp programs at Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Museum of Natural History, including camps at the field research station Powdermill Nature Reserve in Rector, Pennsylvania. A range of opportunities are offered at each location, allowing children to have fun while learning about engaging topics through hands-on experiences.

Carnegie Museum of Art
Carnegie Museum of Art offers a variety of art and architecture summer camps from June 15 to August 14. Through tours of the galleries, exposure to works by famous artists, and hands-on art-making, the camps allow children to develop their artistic skills and creative voice. Half-day Art and Architecture sessions are offered for children ages 4–5; half- or full-day sessions are available for children ages 6–7; and full-day sessions are offered for children ages 8–13. Pre- and post-camp care is available for an additional fee. More information about these programs can be found online at http://www.cmoa.org/programs/camps_arch.asp or by calling 412.622.3131.

Camps include:
Treasure Hunt (ages 4–5): Campers will be invited to explore the museum by following a treasure map of the galleries and hidden spaces. They will make a chest to store handmade treasures they create themselves and then design a museum hunt of their own.
Art Vacation (ages 6–7): Children will visit sunny beaches, tropical islands, and sailboats at sea in artworks in the galleries. They will create a passport, postcards, and souvenirs along the way.
Go Green: Art and Architecture (ages 8–10): Campers will investigate the relationship between art, architecture, and nature. Using everyday materials, they will create their own “green” artwork.
Traveling through Time (ages 11–13): After taking a journey through different time periods and cultures, from ancient civilizations to the Middle Ages to historic Pittsburgh, campers will transform their experiences into original artworks and models.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Carnegie Museum of Natural History offers a variety of weekly camps from June 8 to August 14. During camp sessions, children will be able to discover the museum and explore exhibitions, dig for dinosaur fossils in the Bonehunters Quarry, take virtual tours in Earth Theater, and participate in hands-on learning in the Discovery Room. Half-day sessions are offered to children ages 4–5 and full-day sessions are offered to children ages 6–12. Pre- and post-camp care is available for children 6 and older for an additional fee. More information about these programs can be found online at http://www.carnegiemnh.org/programs/programs/camp-index.htm or by calling 412.622.3131.

Camps include:
Dino Dig (ages 4–5): Campers will take a closer look at Dinosaurs in Their Time to see where the bones came from. They will also act as paleontologists to uncover “fossils” to take home.
Rock On! (ages 6–7): Campers will explore the diversity of rocks and minerals in the museum’s Benedum Hall of Geology and Hillman Hall of Gems and Minerals to view different rocks and minerals on display. Campers will then start rock collections of their own.
A Day in the Life of Ancient Egypt (ages 8–9): Campers journey through the museum’s Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt to learn more about the daily life, customs, and burial practices of the ancient Egyptians.
Career Capers (ages 10–12): Campers will learn about exciting jobs in different fields associated with the museum, such as a paleontologist, astrophysicist, or museum curator.

Powdermill Nature Reserve
Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Powdermill Nature Reserve offers week-long nature programs for children ages 5–12. At these programs, children travel the outdoor trails where they can see wildlife up close and learn about the environment using an exciting hands-on approach. Programs are offered from June 22–July 24. Pre- and post-camp care is available for an additional fee, and transportation from Ligonier is also available. For more information, call 724.593.6105 or visit http://www.powdermill.org/camp.htm

Nature Adventures Camp (ages 7–8): Children will engage in fun scientific inquiry activities focusing on the diversity of life on Earth.
