American Association of Museums - Officers (1906-1908)

Hermon C. Bumpus was elected AAM President in 1906 at the inaugural meeting held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. William M. R. French of the Art Institute of Chicago was elected First Vice President and William J. Holland of the Museum, Carnegie Institute, became Second Vice President. French moved into the presidency and Holland into the first vice presidency the following year, at the Second Annual Meeting held in Pittsburgh. Frederick A. Lucas of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences became Second Vice President. Holland was elected third AAM President at its Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1908, which ironically was the first meeting he was not able to attend, with Lucas becoming its First Vice President and Frederick J. V. Skiff, Director of the Field Museum of Natural History, its Second Vice-President. AAM also annually elected a Secretary, Treasurer, and six Councillors. These early AAM officers represented a diversity of organizations, from botanical gardens and museums of art and natural history to large and small and public and private institutions, with representation from western, mid-western, and especially eastern institutions.
