Atlas
of Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania
Daniel W. Brauning, Editor
Atlas of
Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania, published in 1992, is a landmark
publication about the state’s nesting species. For more than
ten years it has provided the most current and comprehensive information
of any reference on this topic, and it stands as one of the very
best and most attractive among the published state bird atlasses.
The book itself was made possible through the combined efforts of
over 2,000 volunteers who participated in the first Pennsylvania
breeding bird atlas from 1983-1989. Some of these volunteers helped
additionally as regional coordinators for the first atlas, and several
of these were among the authors of the nearly 200 species accounts
in the book.
Although the
point and purpose of the 2nd Pennsylvania Breeding Bird
Atlas (2004-2008) is to provide even more comprehensive and updated
information about the state’s nesting birds—information
that also will be published in book form upon completion of the
project—the original atlas always will be an exemplary reference
to Pennsylvania’s birds. Because it is now out of print, and
through generous permission given us by the University of Pittsburgh
Press and individual artists who illustrated the first Atlas, we
are pleased to be able to now make it available to the second generation
of atlassers in its entirety in electronic (PDF) format. For this
purpose, we have broken the book down into easily downloaded sections.
These can be viewed and printed exactly as they appeared in the
original publication. Importantly, however, they may not be copied
for other than an individual’s personal use. In particular,
the artists retain their image copyrights, so that no additional
copying or use of these images may be made without their permission.
We gratefully
acknowledge the contribution of these illustrators who have given
their permission to display their work on our site: Julie
Zickefoose, Michael
McNelly, Chuck Ripper, Cynthia Page, Nancy Halliday, and John
Sidelinger. Where we were unable to contact artists for permission,
their illustrations were left off the site.
