Now available to all 2nd PBBA participants! Submit your bird observations quickly and easily using one of these convenient methods:

E-mail your bird data to us at mypabird@pabirdatlas.org
or
Phone in your data toll-free at
1-888-PABIRD1

When reporting your observations, we will need to know:

Who? (The species)
What? (The breeding behavior)
Where? (The exact location)
When? (The date)
Why? Because every record counts toward bird conservation in PA!

Be sure to give us your name, address and phone number so that you can be credited as a volunteer and so we can get in touch with you if there are any questions about your record(s).

You can e-mail or phone in as many records as you like as often as you like. Thanks for your help with the 2nd PBBA!

Welcome to Pennsylvania's Second Breeding Bird Atlas
Nesting Yellow-crowned Night-Heron by Mike Lanzone Are you one of the estimated 2.7 million bird watchers in Pennsylvania?

If you are, we need your help! The 2nd Pennsylvania Breeding Bird Atlas is the most extensive survey of the state’s nesting birds ever attempted. Begun in 2004, the five-year 2nd PBBA is in its final year in 2008.

But…it's not too late for you to help!

Young or old, casual “backyard” bird watcher, intermediate birdwatcher, or avid birder, just beginning or with a lifetime of experience — everyone is welcomed and encouraged to take part in the 2nd Pennsylvania Breeding Bird Atlas. Accomplishing the 2nd PBBA means putting as many of Pennsylvania’s thousands of nesting birds on the map as possible. We need the help of volunteers all across the state to reach our goal!

The 2nd PBBA is a joint project of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, with principal funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s State Wildlife Grants program. The Wild Resource Conservation Fund has provided additional project funding. In-kind and other assistance is provided by Pennsylvania’s Bureaus of Forestry and State Parks, Pennsylvania Audubon, Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology, Penn State Cooperative Wetlands Center, Penn State Institutes of the Environment (Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access program, PASDA), Penn State School of Forest Resources and Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Click here for more information on our sponsoring institutions.

Our Most Important Resource is You!
Even with strong institutional support, completing the 2nd PBBA depends on the participation of thousands of volunteers like you. From a single record of a robin nesting on your porch post, to a handful of observations of birds seen at a state park while on your family’s summer vacation, to a long list of nesting species you’ve compiled after having spent dozens of hours watching birds in various habitats throughout one or more of the 4,937 Atlas blocks across the state– every single record adds value to the project.
