Habitat Codes

The Habitat Code (HAB on the field card) is the amount of Hemlock present at the place of observation. These codes are described on the back of the field card and are as follows:
H0- No Hemlocks Present
H1- Single or Scattered Hemlocks present.
H2- Mixed Forest with =50% hemlock
H3- Predominately Hemlock woods (>50%)

This should be your best guess in places where it is close, and should not take much of your time to do (basically, your first impression). This data will help us analyze bird/Hemlock associations as well as validate GIS habitat models used in the atlas. This effort will also help state officials combat the woolly adelgid, an introduced forest insect pest that is weakening and killing hemlocks across their range (see Special Efforts, Hemlock).
