Pennsylvania's
state tree, the Eastern Hemlock, is under attack by the hemlock
woolly adelgid, an introduced forest insect pest. The woolly adelgid
is weakening and killing hemlocks across much of the southeastern
half of the state and is spreading farther west and north year by
year. Hemlock is an important forest tree that creates a special
microclimate unmatched by any other tree in the state, thereby providing
nesting habitat for several specialized breeding bird species. Loss
of this ecologically unique component of Penn’s Woods may
negatively affect bird diversity in many areas. The 2nd PBBA will
attempt to document changes in bird distibutions affected by hemlock
loss, as well as to track the problem itself by including a special
hemlock habitat column on field cards. With the expected number
of 2nd PBBA participants, we can bring in an exceptional amount
of information concerning our state's natural treasure, the Eastern
Hemlock.
