Dino Dig, Afternoon Session
The morning session of this camp is full. Please click here to place your name on the waitlist.
Have a dino-mite week as a junior paleontologist!
Get up-close and personal with
Dinosaurs in Their Time. Find out where
those big bones came from and get to
know the animals they belonged to. Bone
up on your dino facts by studying specimens,
making fossil casts, digging for replica
bones, and investigating the plants of
the Mesozoic Era. Meet the creatures that
roamed with the dinosaurs—early mammals,
reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
Ages 6–7
Full-day camps, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Art Olympics
This camp is full. Please click here to place your name on the waitlist.
Become an art athlete just in time for the
2012 Summer Olympics! Test your
endurance in this art pentathlon, as you
draw, paint, print, sculpt, and collage. Team
up in art relays and make your own Art
Olympics medals. Create a clay figure of an
athlete in action inspired by athletes in
art—swimmers, archers, and even discus
throwers—in the museum’s collection.
Globetrotter
Walk in the footsteps of animals and people
around the world and through time, from
the prehistoric past to today’s world. Follow
the footsteps of early humans across
thousands of miles and decide how you
would adapt to a changing world. Using the
techniques of our ancestors, unleash your
creativity through the challenge of constructing
ice houses, clothing, and the
written word. Dig deeper into the research
of our own scientists as you analyze
petroglyphs—ancient rock art—to
understand the relationships between
people and animals in changing environments.
Unlock the mysteries of ancient
animals, and inscribe your own petroglyphs
as early humans did to tell the story of what
you have discovered.
Ages 8–10

Dream House

Design a house limited only by your
imagination! Get inspired by architectural
drawings, models, and artworks in the
galleries that represent houses from around
the world and throughout history. Create
floor plans, elevations, sections, and a
model of the house of your dreams. Share
your architectural drawings and models with
your family and friends on the last day of
camp.
Eye Spy
Do you have an eye for detail? Do you like
to puzzle through patterns? Join us for a
museum micro-adventure to unearth some
of the smallest specimens we have on
display. Analyze patterns and make
connections between cultural artifacts and
the natural world. Learn how your brain
decodes fine detail by experimenting with
light and color. Use a microscope to
compare the eye structure of insects, fish,
and mammals. Investigate a real cow
eyeball using age-appropriate dissection
tools and techniques.
Ages 11–13
Full-day camps, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Youth Museum Institute: Pure Energy
From fossil fuels to photosynthesis,
investigate different forms of energy.
Explore energy in unexpected places from
prehistoric plankton to a windmill generator
made from a recycled water bottle. Discover
how your body burns calories, and compare
your diet to the diets of animals and people
around the world. Cook up ideas and
sample treats for a line of eco-friendly and
energetically balanced snacks. Learn about
fossil fuels and sustainable alternatives by
building a solar oven and experimenting
with solar cells. Design activities to show
museum visitors the green impact you want
to have in your world.
Fiber Art
Fabric and fiber become your media for
functional and artistic purposes. Enhance
the line, color, texture, and pattern of fabric
as you screen print, embellish, and paint.
Get inspired by fashions and fabrics from
other times and places. |
