IV. Reconstruction
Piecing together
the skull of a new dinosaur for the first time can be a complicated
task. Sometimes mistakes can occur. When the skull of
T. rex was initally reconstructed in the early 1900s, a bone
called the right ectoptygoid was mistaken for the right
postorbital bone and placed in the wrong location. Carnegie
Museum of Natural History's new reconstruction will restore the
right ectoptygoid to its proper place.

In addition,
the plaster portions of the first reconstruction were based
on the skull of Allosaurus because no other specimens
of T. rex had been discovered. The new reconstruction
will be based on the more complete T. rex skeletons that
have been discovered since 1902.
