Discovery Room materials include:
• Theme-based Discovery Boxes
• Microscopes
• Live invertebrate and vertebrate animals in aquariums
• Touchable vertebrate mounts and skeletons
• Touchable fossils and minerals
• A Pennsylvanian seasonal tree with animal residents
• American Indian, ancient Egyptian, modern African, and other cultural artifacts

Family Expedition Kits
Take the Discovery Room experience into the museum! Add interactive fun to selected exhibitions when you take along an expedition kit including museum maps, puzzles, booklets, and hands-on replica specimens. Kits may be checked out from the Discovery Room for one hour. Checkout times vary depending on Discovery Room hours of operation. Kits are especially recommended for repeat visitors.

• For families with pre-school children:
  The Visit My Home kit begins in a snowhouse and ends in a southwestern pueblo. Simple puzzles, booklets, and touchable materials help young children understand cultural diversity.
• For families with elementary-age children:
  The Birds of a Feather kit is a guide to Bird Hall and the amazing world of feathers. Birds of the Night explores the night shift in the avian world and the wonders of nocturnal birds.

Group Visits
Tuesday–Friday throughout the school year, the Discovery Room may be reserved for 30-minute sessions. One group may use the room during each 30-minute session. A maximum of 120 children can be accommodated in one day. Please see the Discovery Room for Groups page for more information.

Saturday: 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Sunday: 1–4:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 1–4:30 p.m. *
Thursday: 1–7 p.m. *
The museum is closed Monday.

Summer Hours (July and August)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Thursday: 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Sunday: 1–4 p.m.

*May also be available 10 a.m.–1 p.m. when not in use by pre-registered groups.
