Carnegie Museum of Natural History is offering several programs and lectures in conjunction with Corps of Discovery: The Natural History of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, an exhibit celebrating the 200th anniversary of this expedition of discovery and exploration. The exhibit runs through May 2005 on the First Floor, beside the Natural History Store. Unless otherwise indicated, the programs are free with museum admission.

rabbitsCorps of Discovery: The Natural History of The Lewis and Clark Expedition features representatives of some of the diverse natural history discoveries of Lewis and Clark journey. Also featured will be some discoveries made along the path of the journey but not reported to have been found by the explorers. Among the thousands of discoveries the group made were prairie dogs, grizzly bears, the mule deer, the mountain beaver or sewellel of the Pacific Northwest, and the Douglas fir.

Free Visitor Programs

Lewis and Clark and the American Bison
Daily during regular Discovery Room Hours

Visit the Discovery Room to learn how Lewis & Clark used bison skins, horns, and teeth. Touch objects made from some of these buffalo parts.

Second Saturday of each month

A docent-led tour of Corps of Discovery: The Natural History of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Mini-tours are approximately 30 minutes long.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History Docents and Teen Docents will be stationed in the Lewis & Clark exhibit with touchable materials.

Free Family Programs

In addition to the amazing experience you'll have in the museum, bring your family to the Free Family Program series on the second and fourth weekends of each month.  Workshops are for families with children under 14 and are free with admission to the museum. No registration is required; just follow the signs located at the entrances!

flowersIllustrating with Lewis and Clark: A Journal Making Activity
February 14 & 15

Families will view journals created by Lewis and Clark and discuss how they included the first scientific descriptions of numerous North American animals. They will then test their scientific illustration skills in the Hall of North American Wildlife by sketching and, in some cases, describing some of the animals. These will be placed into personal wildlife journals that may be used in the museum or elsewhere.



The Journey of Lewis and Clark: A Letter Boxing Activity

March 13 & 14

Follow the trail of Lewis and Clark in this unique museum experience. Using the time-honored game of letter boxing, families will make their own stamp and join a scavenger hunt along the Lewis and Clark trail in the museum.



SiouxSurviving the Expedition: How American Indians Helped Lewis and Clark

In this workshop held in Alcoa Hall of American Indians, families will learn all about how the Lewis and Clark expedition members were able to survive with the help of many American Indians. Secrets to finding food, clothing, and shelter will be highlighted. Discussions will also be held on how an unlikely camaraderie between these two conflicting groups enabled this expedition to be a success.

Corps of Discovery: The Natural History of The Lewis and Clark Expedition can be enjoyed Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $6 for children ages 3-18 and full-time students with ID, and free to children under age 3 and Carnegie members.
