The Confluence of
the Shenandoah - At the confluence of the Potomac and
Shenandoah Rivers, the armory town of Harpers Ferry is located. Lewis
visited this location in March, June, and July of 1803. In 1859 John Brown's
abolitionists' raid on the armory (at arrow) led to his conviction for
treason and hanging in nearby Charlestown. Harpers Ferry is located along
the western edge of the Blue Ridge Physiographic Province. (Lewis, 3/1803,
7/1803)
