3. As the Museum’s collection
grew, many departmental libraries were formed, often beginning
with the personal book and journal collections of individual
curators. These were housed in the departments, so that the scientific
literature would be conveniently located close to the specimen
collections. However, the central Museum Library continued to
grow and in 1977, additional shelving was added to expand the
available space at right angles to the Library’s mezzanine.
