Research Interests:

General Research Interests: Systematics and biogeography of mammals in nuclear Central America (Chiapas-Nicaragua); Central American Chiroptera (Chiapas-NW Ecuador faunistic unit); general Neotropical bats; fruit bats of the genus Sturnira; histological studies of bat reproduction and specialized dermal glands.

Recent Research Activities: Projects concerning species of Sturnira (e.g., morphological variation and distribution of S. mordax; definition of S. oporaphilum). Taxonomic status of Sciurus boothiae annalium Thomas, 1905. Studies of small-mammal flea faunas in select cloud forest habitats in Honduras and Guatemala (support: National Geographic Society, U. S. Food and Drug Administration, G. Netting Fund; inventories terminated in June 1998). Descriptions of new taxa of phyllostomid and vespertilionid bats. Preparation of national checklist- and bibliography-pertinent museum documentation for Guatemala. Mammal resource paper for Belize.

Request: "Proyecto Oso Caballo o Gigante (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)"-- Central American colleagues and I are looking for reliable observations for the presence of this large, endangered mammal in different habitats of Central America. Also, any unpublished field reports from protected areas may provide insight. At this time, we have various forms of documentation that demonstrate the persistence of Myrmecophaga for over the last 20 years in La Mosquitia of eastern Honduras and the Oso Peninsula of Costa Rica. Information is lacking for La Mosquitia of eastern Nicaragua, where we believe significant numbers exist.
