The Maramures District of Romania

The Maramures District in northern Romania has been a source of mineral wealth since ancient times. It is a part of a broad belt of mineralization that extends southward into Serbia and northward into Slovakia. The Roman Empire was first drawn to the region by rich deposits of gold. In more modern times, it has been an important source of lead, zinc, copper, arsenic, silver, and the strategic metal antimony.
