Chinese and American paleontologists discovered
a new species of Mesozoic mammal

The animal is a close relative to both marsupials and placentals, with unique features otherwise only known from monotremes

Position of Akidolestes on the mammalian family tree: it is more closely related to therians including marsupials and placentals than it is to monotremes. However, it has some unusual convergent features in posterior part of the skeleton to the primitive monotremes.
