Led by ceramics artist and art teacher Scott Aiken, students
from the Shady Side Academy Junior, Middle and Senior school
campuses enjoyed working together to create this unique project.
The “Shady Sideosaurus” was covered with over
250 ceramic tiles, each using either relief patterns, fossil
imprints, glaze colors and/or text to convey a theme which
combines Pittsburgh and Education.
Pittsburgh skyline was air brushed on the left side of the
dinosaur’s hood while the University of Pittsburgh’s
Cathedral of Learning was painted on the right side. Numerous
scientific and mathematical equations/formulae were included
on certain tiles as were names of many great thinkers like
Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Galileo, Edwin Hubble, Madam
Currie, Watson & Crick, Franklin, Plato and Aristotle.
While the majority of the educational messages pertain to
math and science, the Junior school students’ ceramic
tiles (hearts, fish, a peace sign and smile faces) serve to
represent the importance of art in the lives of so many people.
