Margaret Doutt was the wife of the chief mammalogist of the Carnegie Museum, J.K. Doutt. Museum researchers sometimes planned time for a visit from their wives, and the women would help with collecting specimens, tending camp, and socializing with the natives. Margaret Doutt, however, was a scientist in her own right. She accompanied her husband on several trips, and it was no small honor when, in 1935, she was specifically requested to accompany the museum crew on a surveying trip to the Twin Islands. Margaret served as the chief botanist on the expedition, and was also responsible for managing the provisions and supplies for the entire trip.
