The goal of the 1935 expedition was to research the zonal boundaries of the plant and animal life of the region, work which was best carried out in the summer. It would seem that the warmer weather would make outdoor work more bearable, but, in reality, the soggy, unfrozen ground actually created problems of its own, as Margaret Doutt observed::

"Walking on the islands is slow and difficult; at every step one’s foot is buried to the ankle in spongy heather and lichens, or sinks to the knee in the swampy margin of some little lake. Progress in any one direction can never continue more than a few hundred yards until it is blocked by a pond. Looking down from some vantage point one gets the impression of a crazy quilt of silver water and green splotches . . ."
