The Arctic summer is a brief interval of round-the-clock daylight, exploding color, and thriving wildlife. However, weather conditions can still turn brutal with no warning. On one of his expeditions, George Sutton thought he could manage a trip to a new area which he had been hoping to explore:

"In early June I decided to try to reach the high country to the northeast of the Post, and if possible, the cliff shores of Fox Channel . . . This trip was a dismal failure. We shot only one seal for dog food, and had little more than reached the cliff at Itiujuak when we were caught in a wild, four-day gale which almost demolished our old tent and buried the dogs . . . we were glad enough to get back alive to the post . . ."
