Husky dogs in modern households are beautiful and gentle pets, but are rarely called upon to show their true strength and resilience. In the Arctic, native hunters lived or died by the ability of these powerful dogs to conquer severe cold, navigate dangerous ice fields, and survive the frequent threat of starvation. George Sutton observed that these ever-present dogs were both a necessity and a comfort::

"So inseparable are the Eskimo and his dogs that many legends concerning the origin of the Inuit include Kingmik (Inuit word for dog) at the very beginning.

"But whatever you may remember about Kingmik and his ways, be sure to remember his howling. For the Husky dog chorus is the national anthem of the North Country . . ."
