Q & A

Q: How did you first meet Spiny?
A: About two months ago I was visiting the museum for the first time ever. I was checking out all of the fossils in Dinosaurs In Their Time and was just in awe. I stopped at the T. rex exhibit and I think I was there for ten minutes just staring at how cool they are when I heard a voice from across the room say, "Pretty big, huh?" Without looking, I responded with an amazed, "Yeah..." The voice then said, "Give me another 10 years and I'll be bigger than that! As long as I continue to eat my fish and veggies, of course." I turned and saw that it was Spiny. It was friendship at first sight!

Q: What's your favorite thing about working with Spiny?
A: What's there not to like!? The best, though, is sometimes Spiny gives me a piggyback ride. The bad part about that is she then wants me to give her one…

Q: Name a time when Spiny surprised/pulled a prank/scared you?
A: One time, on a beautiful spring day, Spiny and I went for a walk in Oakland. She's never seen the international rooms in the Cathedral of Learning so we headed that way. She also wanted to play hide and seek, so we did a twofer: see the rooms while hiding in them. Now Spiny isn't always the best hider, but this time, I couldn't find her! Ten minutes passed and I couldn't find her. Thirty minutes…forty-five minutes…an hour passed. I was scared I lost her for good! I started to give up hope when finally I spotted a footprint in the dirt outside pointing away from the Cathedral. That whole time she was hanging out with Dippy! Man,that was the best hiding she's ever done.

Q: Has Spiny ever eaten your lunch?
A: When hasn't she!? I used to leave my lunch in the back of the van beside her seat and didn't think anything of it. I'm not a big fan of seafood, and that's all she eats, right? Wrong. Apparently Spinosaurus's diet includes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Cheetos, Star Crunch, apples, and iced tea. Who knew? So after two or three weeks of wondering where my food was disappearing to, I finally spied a napkin from my lunchbox hanging out of her mouth. As a paleontologist, I'm glad I'm learning more about her, but as a human who needs to eat lunch, I wish her appetite wasn't so big!

Q: Do you have any other dino friends?
A: I tried to make friends with the Stegosaurus in the museum, but he wouldn't talk to me. I don't think he likes me much…

Q: What is your favorite exhibit at the museum?
A: Outside of the dinosaurs, my favorite exhibit is Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt! I have always loved Egyptian culture and art. It's just so interesting.
