Carnegie Museum
of Natural History (CMNH) is seeking a librarian to head the
Museum’s research library and archive, with expertise in
library and information sciences and preferably with experience
in museum or other research library operation.
Management – The
librarian is in charge of the overall management, care, growth
and accessibility of library and archival collections in the
CMNH research library and archive, as well as in the Museum's
scientific sections. Responsibilities include:
• Managing collection development, acquisitions, cataloguing, maintenance
and preservation; supervising library access and use; providing
reference and other library services;
• Supervising library personnel, student interns and volunteers;
developing and managing the library budget; auditing the collection;
representing the library in external transactions, services, and
exchanges, especially those involving the Museum Scientific Publications;
• Maintenance and improvement of library access to electronic journals,
library and archival websites, and networks; maintenance of all
catalogues and databases of the library;
• Facilitating use of the library and archival resources by museum
staff, external partners, students, and the public; fulfilling
reference needs for museum staff and administration; addressing
external interlibrary loan, archival and image requests;
• Providing information on the library and archives as required for
various museum reports; providing advice on issues relating to
the library and archival collections (such as strategic planning);
obtaining external funding for research, library improvement and
student internships.
Professional Service – The Librarian is
expected to participate in CMNH committees and task forces, and
to perform other tasks
(e.g., assisting in fund-raising) as required by the Museum; to
be active in external professional and academic communities; and
to have the ability to interact with diverse audiences, including
educational groups, and faculty members in other institutions.
Research and Public Outreach - The librarian is
strongly encouraged to develop scholarly interest in library and
information sciences,
archival research and/or natural history for the benefit of research
and scholarship. The librarian is expected to support and to participate
in (when appropriate) the museum’s programs in exhibition
and public education.
Responsibilities - 60% in management of the library
and archive, 20% in service for the museum and external academic
community;
20% in research, public outreach and support for the museum’s
public programs. CMNH offers 10-month curatorial appointments,
under which a curator or librarian may use two months per year
for professional activities related to the Museum’s mission
in research, exhibits, and teaching at universities.
Qualifications - An ALA-accredited masters degree in library and/or
information science is required, along with a minimum of three
years of management experience in libraries. Background in museum
studies, archives and/or natural history is desirable (although
not required). Those with management experience in museum libraries
are particularly encouraged to apply.
