mezz_view3. As the museum’s collection grew, many departmental libraries were formed, often beginning with the personal book and journal collections of individual curators. These were housed in the departments, so that the scientific literature would be conveniently located close to the specimen collection. However, the central Museum Library continued to grow, and in 1977 additional shelving (such as the beige units visible at right side of photo) were added to expand the available space.
