Founded in 1895 by Andrew Carnegie,
we are guided by our mission statement:
Carnegie
Museum of Natural History conducts scientific inquiry that creates
knowledge and promotes stewardship of Earth and its life; builds
strategic collections to preserve evidence of that knowledge; and
engages the public in the excitement of scientific discovery about
the evolutionary, environmental, and cultural processes that shape
the diversity of our world and its inhabitants.
Here
in cyberspace you will find information, images, and resources that
relate to our mission. We hope this will be just the first step
toward your visiting us in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
Since February
of 2001, I have been privileged to be the Director of CMNH. It is
both humbling and challenging to build on the rich tradition of
this museum, a place with one of the world's finest collections
of dinosaurs (and that displays the real fossils, not the casts
seen in most museums), the dazzling Hillman Hall of Minerals and
Gems, the new Alcoa Foundation Hall of American Indians, and 19
other exhibit halls, with themes ranging from anthropology to zoology.
Our scientific staff includes many talented professionals who conduct
research in every part of the world and study our vast collection
of over 20 million objects and specimens. The Division of Education
brings natural history to hundreds of thousands of people annually
through programs in the museum and a variety of outreach activities,
including programs for children with special needs and for seniors.
My goal is to
lead CMNH by building on this rich tradition of excellence. To visitors,
my commitment is to insure that through visits to the museum and
our Web site, you will share with us the excitement of discovery
and investigation about the Earth and its inhabitants. I hope you
will be able to visit us in person very soon.
